My grandaughter has an emotional support bird (a cockatoo). I know for a fact she does need it (she doesn't take it everywhere with her, though).
There are people who actually do need emotional support animals which aren't always the usual dog or cat but there are many people who have abused the concept of emotional support animals just to get away with taking their pets wherever they want even when they otherwise wouldn't be allowed to take it. I have serious issues with the abusers since it makes life more difficult for the people who actually do need them. Our laws here in the SSA need to be updated to make recognizing legitimate support and service animals more positive (such as requiring the wearing of a vest and severe legal penalties for those who abuse the system).
